I asked at work today if they provided any sort of web hosting services. I kind of got an 'I dont know' answer so I'm going to ask a bit more tomorrow. It would be cool if I could host SYR/SLSD at work because I could admin it myself, and I know their backbone is much, much more stable than IX's bullshit.
The other option I thought about was to get a business cable modem setup and run a server here at home. While I obviously would not mind this, the cost is kind of prohibitive compared to what IX cost us. It is $95 a month, I pay $45 now so it would be an extra $50 a month or $600 a year, plus I would have to probably have to upgrade my server box at home right now with probably at least 2 new hard disks and some ram so it could handle the site, plus provide backup capability.
Obviously I'm going to ask tomorrow about work, maybe we can work something out where I can host it there, I think that would really be cool as shit to be able to host my own site....

so if you did that there would be no middle man then? you have a direct connection and thats it? Sounds nice. Wouldnt have to worry about slowness then?

if I did it at work, which would be ideal, it would be on a tier 2 backbone to the internet. I would admin the server so if something blows up (unlikely) it would be my fault. I'm just not sure if its something they'll let me do or not. I'm working tomorrow morning with one of the senior guys so I'll run it by him. If that doesn't work out, if I host it at home, obviously no middle man. The business cable lines are open as far as ports, and have more bandwidth (6mbps down, 768kb up). The only downside to this is if the site grows alot (and it would have to quite a bit), it will out grow this bandwidth and server. I guess if I go this route, and that happens, we're back to looking at hosting it elsewhere since the cost to run a T1 into my house is rediculous and will never happen. Qwest actually offers small business DSL at 3-5mbps down/896kb up for $15 a month cheaper than Comcast, but after my last experience with them, they can blow me.

Pete, this host blows. I will host the site for free on my site5 reseller account. Post up how many mb of space the site takes up and how much bandwidth you use, I should have plenty of space.

this host does f'in blow. I was actually looking at getting new hosting secured this week (got most of the shirt payment stuff in last week)
Josh, do you think your reseller account would have better performance over their multi-site hosting plan?

I just bought the multi-site plan for 2 years. I'll start moving things over as I can, hopefully I can have all the content in place, switch over the DNS, then move the forum database over as well, so downtime should be minimal.

SYRacingInc.com has been moved and the DNS changed, it will obviously take some time to propagate. I'm going to move the photo album over to SLSD.com so the photo album will be offline until SLSD.com is moved as well.

Who is your domain registrar? Godaddy? Mine always seem to propagate within an hour or two, which is alot faster than it quotes.

syr is through godaddy, SLSD is through IX, I'm probably going to transfer it to godaddy.

I definitely would, they seem flaky as hell and I wouldn't trust them with my domain.
