My receiver is a 7 year old Aiwa, yea it does 5.1 Dolby but I think its getting a little long in the tooth, I'm thinking put it out in my garage for ultimate garage rocking.

Anyone have any recommendations for receiver brand and or speakers?  I'd like to get a surround sound setup going again, but I don't have a ton of room for huge floor speakers.  I'd also like a subwoofer, since Deanna moved out and I don't have to be quiet at 8pm I want bass

Obviously just like anything, budget is somewhat of a concern, I may just get a piece or two at a time.  I have a set of 5.25 inch Sony bookshelf speakers on stands now along with a 3rd channel speaker on my TV.  They sound ok, but no bass....my surround speakers were destroyed by the Sasha monster when she knocked them off the railing and down the stairs....

Heres what I have and I love it.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Digital-5-Piece-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002WPSBC/ref=pd_bbs_4/002-1535742-7475257?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183908812&sr=8-4

At the time I bought them, it was only like $220 (looks like amazon themselves doesn't sell the product anymore).  Anyways, this is a very nice and simple set up.  It comes with everything you need, very cool.  The subwoofer is about the size of a 19" CRT and sounds awesome.  Guitar Hero will be like a brand new game.

It processes Dolby Digital and DTS.  Not sure how much of an audiophile, but HD-DVD / blu-ray offer PCM and DD HD tracks and DTS HD.  I've never heard them myself but I've read that its awesome (my current set up doesn't leave me wanting for more so I don't plan on upgrading).

Buy a used receiver off of hometheaterforum from a guy that is upgrading.  Couple year old HK or Pioneer, Denon, etc.

Danny, you have to remember you are in an 8x8 room with one opening.  Put those in Petes 15x15 living room with the open foyer, hallway and open dining room and it probably wouldn't be adequate.

Thats true, but I don't even play my speakers near the max.

If you can afford it, go for what Josh is posting.  Its just going to be mega $$$ is all.  You're still going to need a good receiver too after all that.

I'll probably get speakers first....my receiver isn't bad, but I just wonder if its causing the so so audio quality, or the speakers I have now.  I was just at Best Buy looking at their stuff, they have some decent looking Yamaha receiver and speaker sets for 500-700.  I also bought a 19" Westinghouse LCD HDTV for my room while I was there.

Go to www,hometheaterforum.com and post.  Great forum, they will steer you in the right direction, but I will warn you they are anti-hometheaterinabox.

You can't shake a stick at it for $100 bones... and if you get more serious down the road you can upgrade and toss that one in the bedroom, computer room or garage.
