what fancy gadget do i need?

so we are trying to figure out a good way to keep track of our materials, what is in each conex and such.  we were thinking maybe a palm pilot or something.  a laptop doesnt work since i cant really keep it in the inside pocket of my coat when im not using it.  its about 25degrees here and dropping so keeping it in a coat is the only way to keep it warm and batteries charged.  i need something that i can input a conex number followed by a list of stuff.  it would be very nice if it was searchable, like an excel type spreadsheet.  there are also a handful of other uses that would be nice, but the above is objective number one.  i dont keep up with all the new gadgets that come out, or even the old ones that much.  i know most of you guys have a far better idea of what is out there.

a real good way to keep track of your materials is RFID tags but it doesn't sound like you have the time to mess with any of that crap...

How about a cellphone that runs excel?

a cellphone could possibly work, but there has got to be a gadget that will do this.  all you geeks and no-one knows anything about gadgets?
