Need you techie geek types to help me make an informed decision.  Im thinking about buying an MP3 player...but I also want to be able to watch TV and some movies with it when Im traveling to races etc etc.

Right now I typically bittorrent my music in or rip the CDs I own...I havent bought a CD in probably 10 years...but I torrent monthly for whatever new stuff strikes my fancy...

So if you were in the market to find a player to do that- what would you get?  I dont like the idea that I have to pay a buck for a song, but would pay $10-15 for a movie...Can I take a DVD and rip it onto an MP3 player?

80gb enough???

ELake would probably be the man in the know here.  Other than having a 2gb Sansa for working out with, I know nothing about this stuff.

sounds like you'd be better off with a tablet pc or laptop.  then you gain a lot more features.   this thread is bringing back some bad memories of recent MP3 player purchases..  070

I got the new 80gb ipod classic for $249 and like it.  It is the right price and I am haven't even put a dent in the 80 gig with a bunch of music, 4K photos and some tv shows.  I still use torrents for all my music, but I downloaded Heroes from itunes when I wanted to watch it.  Its very easy to watch shows on.. clear, bright and you soon forget it is on a small screen.  The only thing I am not sure about is if you can download a show or move or rip a dvd then convert it to be played on the ipod?  I am sure there is a program to do it?

Ive gone from a laptop to a portable DVD player to wanting something even smaller....schelping it thru security and on the airplane when traveling has become a major pita for me- so I want something nice and small...

Im really leaning towards an 80gig iPod classic unless I can be swayed otherwise...I'll wait for the two experts to chime in though

The Zune scares me frankly- so no problems there! :)  Im leaning more and more Mac stuff lately because all I do is surf the net and tinker with videos/music and stuff...Yes I use the crap out of spreadsheets and stuff at work- but I aint buying the hardware for that!!!!

I googled up DVD ripping onto an iPod appears to be some software out there that can do it...

I'm with Josh.  I think the ipod video 80G classic is an awesome deal at $249.  I'm sure there are programs to rip movies/whatever and upload them to your ipod.

If I were going to buy a mp3 player, and I plan on doing so within the next few months, it'd definitely be a 80g ipod.  I think thats a very good price for video, 80gigs, etc.

Also wanted to add that when I shopped around a couple months back, at that price range, the competition didn't even come close in terms of capacity, features (video), battery life, and other various areas.  That was also right when the Ipod Classic came out too so things might have changed a little since then, but probably not much.

You don't have to pay for anything with an ipod if you don't want to.  You also can take any DVD you have and shrink it down for your ipod as well.  Nothing better than the ipod out there and there's a reason they're on top and have been for quite a few years.  You can take a look ebay/craigslist for used as well.  Will save you a few bucks if you're not scared to deal with the chance that it will go toes up....

I would get a Sony PSP!  They are only 169 dollars, you can buy tons of movies for them (460 movies to be exact, TV shows available too), its an MP3 player, you can convert videos and put them on it(convert to MPG4), it has wireless internet, and you can play games.  No ipod can touch that.

Actually, Jer makes a VERY good point.  I many times forget about my PSP.  It can do everything but it doesn't have a ton of space on it, that's the downfall.  You can obviously buy cards, but they're not super cheap.  Still, a very good option!

PSPs UDM format is quite gay IMO and the set itself is probably the size of 4 ipods with a comparable screen size to boot..

BC I like devices that can do multiple things thats why I"m learning towards a cellular/music/video solution to recommend for ya...Only problem is the videos, bulk storage on the ipod level isn't there on cellies yet... The Nokia N95 8gb is a pretty bad phone, even has a 5MP carl zeiss optic, I'm not sure how it does with action shots (quad jumping etc) something to chew on anyway.. They are quad band which is good for 50 states and most foreign countries (except south korea and japan, I found that out the hard way)

For a dedicated music & video solution its a tossup between the ipod or the Zen, personally I like creative's interface tons better than the Ipods.. For software you don't really have to use itunes I suppose, just dump stuff in when it creates a drive on your PC..
Ipod has way more support, parts are cheap and plentiful... Damn that classic 80s only $250? Hell I paid 250 last year for my sisters 40gb Zen
