thousands of people at his funeral.  athletes truly do touch many of us daily.. even athletes few have heard of.  pro athletes are worth every penny for the affect and significance they play on society.

Sad news.  However, what do you expect.  You can take the thug out the hood but you cant take the hood out the thug.  You give these 20 year old kids millions of dollars and all they do is bring the hood with them to the suburbs.

Its pathetic that these athletes have this effect on society.  Absolutely pathetic.  Nobody is worth the money these guys are getting.  Teachers, doctors, etc should be making the big bucks, not these glorified thugs.

it really is too bad that someone who was trying to turn his life around was victimized like this.  It's also too bad he was forced to protect himself with a machete instead of a gun.  Long live the 2nd Amendment.

I think his prior conviction of pistol whipping someone prevented him from owning a gun.

he pulled his gun in self defense at his own property, and was prosecuted for it.

He pulled his gun on 3 people who he believed stole his ATVs.  Then fled the scene.  I dont think he was at his own property.

and all 3 were later arrested for stealing ATVs.  Go figure!  These same 3 also sprayed his Yukon with rounds from a 9mm pistol and an AK47.  Sounds like self defense to me.

i disagree that athletes aren't worth every penny.  they do as much for our society as teachers, doctors, etc.  our society/lives are built around the following:  eating, sleeping, working, recreation.  Under recreation, sports play a massive role in the day-to-day lives of people.  What athletes give us is priceless.  People see the doctor once a year IF THAT, however, most people watch sports daily and for hours at a team.  They have a huge effect on our lives.  There are bad doctors, thug athletes, and overall bad people in every profession, but that's not the norm.

Professional athletics are the core recreational activity that much of this country and other countries build their after work activities upon.  You can say that doctors save lives, teachers teach, and firefighters save our home, but athletes give us a tremendous amount of happiness DAILY, something few other professions give.  The other part of the equation is that professional athletes touch millions daily.  They have one of the most important jobs in the world are many times overlooked.  Kobe Bryant has given me a ton of joy, just as the Minnesota Twins have given Pete an almost unfathomable amount of joy (as sad as that is).  Yes, we could potentially live without these people, but the fact is we don't.  Look how often we read about our favorite teams, study their stats, watch them on TV, talk about them with co-workers and family members.  They do make a lot, but they are an integral cog in our society.

I dont care who you are, nobody is worth 20 million a year and nobody is worth 30 million for signing your name on a contract.

The sad part about all of this is that its being reported that the shooter was only 17 years old.  The other 3 are all under 20 years old as well.  Maybe if these kids werent idolizing athletes and thug rappers all day (they showed their MYspace pages on the news and they were all acting like rap stars) this kind of thing wouldnt have happened.  WTF are the parents?

Oh yea, another black on black crime...go figure!

One thing to remember is that these people are getting paid to play a GAME.  They arent getting paid to touch lives.

but they DO touch lives and that's why they get paid what they do.  society LOVES sports and athletes and because it is so important to our people, they get paid in accordance to that.  jobs that are important get paid more.  they may play a game, but those games are HUGE entertainment to us.  think about how many people watch local sports and how much time they spend doing it.  that effect that sports has on us is why they get those large paychecks.

think of the total amount of enjoyment and entertainment sports brings... they DO touch people and that's why they're so integral to our society.  the other part of the equation is that people choose to watch sports and love sports.  sure, something else could take sports place, but we choose to elevate them as the highest and probably most enjoyable activity for many many millions of people.

it's hard to fathom that much money to one person.  it doesn't mean that they're really any more important, but they're job plays a massive role and does touch many many people.

it may seem like a simple game, but when that game brings out that much emotion, causes that much talk and attention, it's worth it.

Do you think the yankees paid A rod 275 million because he touches the lives of yankees fans?  You know, the fans who boo him even during an MVP year.
