Im really looking into getting a new camera for myself. I love taking pics and the cameras we have now are good, but I want more. Im thinking that I am going to start raking in some OT here at work and in a few weeks maybe purchase a camera. Price ranges look from anywhere $500 on up. Id like to get a nice one, but not too costly.
Especially with going to Yellowstone this year while in Idaho, I want to really get some good pics and maybe even get them printed.
Does anyone already have one that can help me in what direction to go in? What brands, lenses and so on.

I believe his is a Nikon.

I don't know though, his SLR is pretty darn big and I definitely wouldn't feel too comfortable taking a $500 camera with me on rides.

We recently upgraded from our little point and shoot Panny digi-cam to a digi SLR.  What Im finding is that the lense you use is nearly as important as the camera body itself.  Good lenses are just as expensive as a camera. A good 70-200mm f2.8 lense runs just about the same as the camera did.  A low F stop lense is critical for action shots like riding but you also need a little telephoto length too.  Thats why most of the photo-togs at the track that I talk to all without a doubt say a 70-200 2.8 lens is it.  You may also find that you want a 50mm f1.4 lense for close in shots like portraits, candids, etc....

Canon Rebel XTi is what we bought and so far it has been an excellent camera.

Takes absolutely amazing pictures  prayer even with the crappy lense that comes with the "kit".  I borrowed a good 70-200 lense from a friend and the pictures were even better...It made me feel like one of them there professionals...

Features on the camera are easy to use and the large LCD display on the back is nice.  A friend has a 30D and I feel that the XTi is easier to use.

agreed.  Heather, you might want to hit up Mike too and see what he has for his setup.  The pictures he took of me and Chris in Idaho in 2006 are awesome.

BC, thanks!  I have a Canon Rebel 35mm at home and Its very easy to use and takes amazing pics. I just dont use it because I dont want to develop film anymore.
I will probably buy a kit that has a good camera and a decent lens then eventually get a better lens. What brand lens did your friend have?

What did your XTi run?

the Rebel XT seems to have some good reviews and is less then the XTi, but it is an 8.0mp vs a 10.1mp

This might be a stupid question...does a lens from a 35mm camera fit on the body of the digital? I know that I have 2-3 lens from 35mm's. Wondering if they will do for the time being until I can save up more for a better lens. That way I can spend a little more on the camera itself and get a better one.
