This was a day hike through Tallulah Gorge in Northeast Georgia. Tallulah Gorge is where everyone's favorite movie, Deliverance, was filmed. It's the second deepest gorge in the US, second to the Grand Canyon. The rangers are ultra cool and knowledgeable. In order to enjoy the Gorge Floor Trail which is essentially all climbing over big rocks, you need to get a permit for the day -- to get the permit you have to show you are wearing proper footwear! We were, obviously. It made all the difference.

Larger, better, and more images are available at my page, here: http://www.umich.edu/~olmsnj/images/outdoors/tallulah_gorge_0410/

Oceana Falls, 50' tall.

Me trying not to fall off a rock just downriver from Oceana Falls (visible in background)

The first crossing to begin the Gorge Floor Trail -- the trail's starting point access is from the stairs across the river. There are some serious jumps across boulders to stay dry, and the gorge has some deep spots if you wade. Or, mix and match. Wife's putting the hiking boots back on in this pic. We didn't get very wet crossing it though the flow was up a bit from the norm due to a water release the day before. This part is quite literally the sink or swim start of the trail.

Me standing near the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls / Sliding Rock.

Hurricane Falls, 96' high. This was taken right at the Gorge Floor Trail beginning, after doing the first fun river crossing.

This was taken from the south rim of the gorge -- you can barely make out the trail down to the gorge floor. Barely visible in the larger one (visit my website -- see above) near the upper left is a person in a red shirt near the gorge edge, to give some scale to the pic.
