Sam and I drove up to Savanna State Park, a little north of McGregor, MN for a little backpacking and hiking.  The campsite was only 2.5 miles from the parking lot, which turned out to be about 2 miles too far with how bad the mosquitos were.  Needed a blow torch to keep those SOB's at bay!  I haven't hiked with as much weight as I would be carrying before, and decided something simple like this would be a good first trip.  We were quite surprised when we arrived at the site to see a woodshed, picnic tables, and a fire ring.  Bonus!  I weighed my pack before putting it into the truck, and without water it was only 21 lbs.  The major things I brought were my Alps Mountaineering Lynx 2 tent, footprint, sleeping bag and pad, stove, pot, bowl and silverware, food, water, light, and other small stuff.  The best thing I brought was mosquito coils.  I had 3 of them going, and with the campfire, they drove the mosquitos away.  I ended up putting our food in the woodshed, which in hindsight was a bad idea.  Sam heard something in there about midnight, and I got up to see nothing in there....except granola bar crumbs all over.  Damn nice.  I ended up standing outside in my underwear with only a headlamp on rigging up a bag and some string to hang our food in a tree!  At least it was nice out....

The trip was a success with the exception of Sam being a woodtick magnet.  The swimming beach there was really nice, we ate lunch there and hung out for about an hour or so.  I brought my D90 but only packed the 18-55 VR lens due to it's light weight.  Here are a few pics

1.  Beach on Loon Lake, and as the name says, we saw a pair of loons out on the lake
2.  Our camp
3. view of Wolf Lake from camp
4. me sitting on the dock at the access on Wolf Lake
5. dragon flies eating above us
6. map of Wolf Lake.  You can see where our camp was on the south side.

1. Sam in the tent hiding from the mosquitos
2. Park sign
3. These last 2 are my favorite pics from the trip.  I like the colors in the first one better, but I like the dragonfly silhouette in the 2nd.  I  might do a little touchup on these if I have time and maybe print them

Nice. Is the woodshed actually stocked with firewood, or what is its purpose?

the park does.  I'm guessing they take a quad up once a week with some wood to put into it.

We were eaten alive over the weekend in maryland too. Well, more like annoyed the hell out of.  Very few mosquitoes, but tons of gnats and annoying bugs.  Luckily the bug spray helped a lot.  Were the mosquitoes laughing at your bug spray?

Ooh, you're rolling strong now like Josh does.  He doesn't mess around.  Careful though, that 99% deet is like spraying yourself with battery acid.

(this is disgusting)
