after 2 hours of messing around with cables, different drives, etc, I discovered this.  Not sure if its for sure the cause, but I can't imagine a PC with half of the capacitors on its motherboard leaking is very stable.  Most of the ones that aren't leaking have bulging tops.  Last Epox motherboard I ever buy....

guess its all I needed to motivate myself to build a new PC in one of those micro cases I was looking at.  I don't want a big clunker PC anymore.  I'll probably keep the hard drives, processor, and memory I have, and sell my loud video card and go from there.

but the OS isn't.  The real benefit will be when the OS goes 64 bit, and the processors will be twice as fast as they are now.
