why do i always lose my cameras then find them later after they are ruined, outdated, or missing some parts?

im looking at picking up a go-pro hero HD.  they are mainly used as a helmet cam or vehicle mounted, but is supposed to function as a standard camera as well.  for a helmet cam, the profile is pretty gay.  the video does come out stellar though, from what ive seen.

looking for something that i can use for video mostly.  something i can use on my sled, quad, wheeling trucks, jet-skiing hopefully.  does anyone know how they hold up to impacts?  such as the snow and ice boulders kals 1.75 track and busted tail flap launch?  or gravel roost?
